RADFORD, Va. (AP) - A Virginia teen has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping and strangling a 14-year-old girl in 2017.

The Roanoke Times reports 18-year-old Michael Mendoza pleaded guilty Monday to rape and strangulation as part of a plea deal that dropped six other charges against Mendoza.

Commonwealth's Attorney Chris Rehak says Mendoza, the girl and several other teens were smoking marijuana together at a house last November. Rehak says Mendoza made a sexual advance on the girl, who turned him down.

He says Mendoza then carried her into a back bedroom, strangled and raped her. Mendoza and his attorney, Matt Roberts, agreed with Rehak's summary of the attack.

Mendoza also is sentenced to 5 years' supervised probation after his release.
